Multi-Generational Homes on the Rise

With 41% of homebuyers searching for a property that can accommodate the growing trend for multi-generational housing it can become a challenge to find a suitable home that can meet the need. The challenge generally stems from decades of homes that were purpose built to suite a single family. Accessory apartments, separate entrances, and segregated living space can be difficult to find.

Boomer's are taking in their parents, and GenX'ers are making space for an adult child in college or one just starting out. There are solutions to this growing trend, some of which are driving families to sell the single family residence and search for a property that comfortable fit everyone.

Additional challenges come from aging parents that may need a more accessible property. Some properties can be modified to create access ramps or add support hardware to bathrooms to make them safer and easier for aging parents.

Despite the challenges there are great benefits from living in a multi-generational home. There are emotional benefits like“Children who are close to their grandparents have fewer emotional and behavioral problems and are better able to cope with traumatic life events, like a divorce or bullying at school” - University of Oxford.
